Native and Introduced Grasses
As an industry leader, we maintain one the largest inventories of native and introduced grasses in the western United States. We currently produce and collect both warm and cool season grasses. Availability varies from one season to the next due to environmental conditions and demand. If you don't find the species or cultivar listed in this reference please give us a call. Our species list is constantly growing and we may be able to help you meet your project's needs.
Forbs, Legumes & Wildflowers
Our primary focus is to inventory as many native species as possible. Due to space limitations we could not include all of our inventory of forbs, legumes, and wildflowers. You will find the native and introduced species most commonly used. If you don't find the species you are looking for, please call our office for specific information regarding availability and pricing.
Riparian/Wetland Species
Maintaining and restoring riparian / wetland areas is important to us. At Rainier Seeds, Inc. we are harvesting and cleaning several different native wetland species. Call for seed availability and pricing, or to obtain technical data when writing specifications in a riparian / wetland mitigation or restoration project.
Forage Legumes
We carry a large inventory of legumes used for pasture and range. We have tried to keep the forage legumes as simple as possible. Please call and we will provide specific seeding information for you. If you don't find the legume in our catalog, we will gladly find the specific forage legume for you.
Native Trees & Shrubs
We have native seed collectors that are harvesting tree and shrub seed throughout western North America. Most of our native shrub and tree seed is Source Identified so you will know specifically where the seed is from. We maintain a large inventory of species that are ready for immediate shipment.
Native Seed Collection
Our native plant seed collection specialists collect seed throughout the western United States. This ensures we maintain one of the most diverse inventories of native plant seeds. In situations where availability is limited, we can provide custom collection services to meet your needs.
Most of the seed we collect is entered into the Source Identified Program. Many hours of work go into locating and identifying a native seed source, acquiring permission to collect, harvesting and processing the seed. The Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies, (AOSCA) will verify the seed as "native". An applicant applying for certification of privately collected seed is required to send a "Germplasm Collection Form" to OASCA. This form documents the specific location that the seed was collected from. An AOSCA inspector will visit the site to verify that it is native. This seed will receive a yellow tag indicating to our customers that the seed is source identified and will include the specific location, elevation of the collection and the date the collection was completed.
Ecotype Production
Rainier Seeds, Inc. has been producing source identified ecotypes for over 15 years. We have produced source identified seed for the Mt. Hood National Forest, Umatilla National Forest, Gifford Pinchot National Forest and many other public and private organizations. We can produce source identified seed on a project by project basis using the seed you've collected or we can collect the seed for you. If it is necessary for your project, we can produce seed using native seed that has been certified in the Source Identified Program. Typically, 12 months or more may be required to increase the seed for your project.
Our primary production location is in the heart of the Columbia Basin in eastern Washington State. This area receives 9-12" of rain annually, the growing season is hot and dry. Our fields are fully irrigated creating an ideal location for seed production. Our other production areas can be found throughout eastern Washington.
Contracts for ecotype production are based on a price per pound basis. Call Rainier Seeds, Inc. for more information and project details.
Forestry / Logging
Healthy productive forests and forest lands are vital aspects of our environment and benefit everyone. Our extensive selection of grass, forb and legume seeds are available in stock blends or can be custom blended to achieve erosion control, forage improvement or wildlife enhancement.
Native Grass Straw
In the past few years Rainier Seeds, Inc. has recognized the increasing need for native grass straw for use in reclamation plantings. We are working with state and federal agencies to develop a method of certifying native grass straw. After native grass seed is harvested from a certified field, we bale the straw in either a two or three tie bale. These bales are an ideal way to ensure you are not contaminating your site with undesirable seeds from weeds or other introduces species.
